There is more at stake in pastoring God’s flock than we are able to fully comprehend. Yet what we can grasp of this noble stewardship is more than sufficient to rivet the attention. The Apostle Paul exhorts Timothy to exercise keen watch-care over his own soul and over his teaching. What is at stake? In so doing, Paul exhorts Timothy, “you will save both yourself and your hearers” (1 Tim 4:16). Nothing less than perseverance unto eternal salvation is at stake in the example we provide to Christ’s church and in the faithful doctrine we teach believers week by week.
The Apostle Peter exhorts elders to watch over the flock of God with integrity of character. What is at stake? The chief Shepherd will appear and bestow on faithful pastors “the unfading crown of glory” (1 Pet 5:4). Nothing less than a share in Christ’s glory as Savior awaits faithful under shepherds in eternity.
In light of these eschatological prospects, I greatly anticipate benefitting from the teaching and counsel of David Mathis. David will speak to us as a pastor to pastors. He will also speak to us as one who has invested significantly in considering precisely who a pastor must strive to be according to the chief Shepherd.
It is my prayer that our joy as pastors, and that the health of our local churches, will profit greatly from David’s exceptional teaching. Please consider joining us as we partner together in building up the church for which Jesus died.
For the Glory of Christ,
Dan Miller
