Our risen Savior designed the local church to serve as a warm environment of soul-care. Accordingly, a key aspect of our pastoral mission involves leading the churches we serve to consciously value and actively participate in collaborative soul-care of Christ’s flock.
A major challenge we face in this regard involves practice: First, to practice what we know; second, to know what to practice.
With respect to practicing what we know, I’ve encountered only one Christian in my long life who was entirely satisfied with her prayer life (my assessment was less enthusiastic, but that’s a story for another time). But similarly, I’ve met very few pastors who are entirely satisfied with their church’s ministry of soul-care. I do not count myself among those few. A keen perception of importance does not always translate into zealous and wise practice of what we know, does it?
With respect to knowing what to practice, we are painfully aware that the nature of soul-care today is subject to a wide range of conclusions, even among Bible-believing churches. What is the nature of faithful soul-care and how should our ontological conclusions influence our practice of it?
In light of these challenges, we are pleased to welcome Dr. T. Dale Johnson to help us think biblically about soul-care in our churches and to stimulate our practice of this vital aspect of pastoral ministry. Please consider joining us this year as we seek to grow our capacities and affections to care for Christ’s flock.

Speaker Bios
T. Dale Johnson, Jr., is the Director of Counseling Programs and Professor of Biblical Counseling at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is husband to Summer, and they live together in Kansas City, Missouri, with their six children: Easton, Titus, Will, Ellie, and twin girls Annadale and Caroline.
Johnson served as Associate Pastor of Family Life at Raiford Road Church in Macclenny, FL, before completing his Ph.D. in Biblical Counseling at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Johnson also serves as the Executive Director of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors. He regularly travels to speak and is the host of ACBC’s “Truth in Love” podcast.
He is the author of The Professionalization of Pastoral Care in America (Wipf&Stock), The Church as a Culture of Care (New Growth Press), and Legal Issues in Bliblical Counseling. He deeply loves the Scriptures and the local church and is committed to equipping pastors and church members alike to minister God’s sufficient Word.
Dan Miller has served Eden Baptist Church as lead pastor since 1989. He grew up in the Philadelphia area, then returned to the state of his birth. Dan earned a M.A. in History from Minnesota State University, Mankato; M.Div. and Th.M. degrees from Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Minneapolis; and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Chicago. He is married to Beth and the Lord has blessed them with four children and a growing gaggle of grandchildren. Dan enjoys playing sports, skiing, hiking, landscaping, visiting historical sites, reading, and doing virtually anything on earth with Beth.
